The auxiliary generator (aux gen) is a smaller generator mounted on the locomotive and driven from the main engine. Its purpose is to provide power for train lighting, battery charging, control electronics, and other auxiliary loads — independent of the main traction generator. Locomotive auxiliary generators typically operate at lower voltages (32V to 74V DC, or 480V AC on brushless models) and must deliver reliable output across the engine's full speed range.
Supco Canada stocks and supplies aftermarket aux generators and components for EMD® 10 KW, 18 KW, and 24 KW models, as well as EMD® AC Brushless units and GE® Exciter generators. Both new and remanufactured units are available, and individual sub-components including rotors, armatures, voltage regulators, and brush holders can be sourced for workshop repair.
