The electrical and control system of a diesel-electric locomotive encompasses everything from the engineer's control stand and throttle to the individual relays, contactors, modules, and circuit boards that manage engine speed, power distribution, traction motor excitation, and protective functions. On modern microprocessor-controlled locomotives these systems include digital control cards and communication modules; on older cam-controlled units they rely on electromechanical contactors and relay logic.
