The diesel prime mover is the core of every diesel-electric locomotive. EMD® 645 and 710 series two-stroke engines and GE® four-stroke engines power the vast majority of freight and passenger locomotives in service worldwide. These engines develop between 2,000 and 4,400 horsepower depending on model and must operate reliably under continuous full-load conditions with minimal scheduled downtime.
