The main traction generator — or alternator on more modern locomotives — is mechanically coupled directly to the diesel prime mover and converts the engine's rotational energy into electrical power for the traction motors. On EMD® 645/710 engine-family locomotives the main generator is a self-excited DC machine; on GE® platform locomotives it is typically a brushless AC alternator. Both types operate at high power levels and must withstand continuous vibration, temperature cycling, and electrical stress.
Supco Canada supplies aftermarket components for the full range of EMD® main generators — including the AR6, AR8, AR10, AR11, CA5, and D-series (D12, D22, D32, D25) — as well as the GE® 5GTA24A4 alternator. Individual components such as armatures, commutators, main poles, companion alternator rotors, and insulation kits are available for workshop repair programs.
